Assists Refinery Process Engineers in providing technical support for
a variety of refinery units in order to achieve the most optimum
performance while meeting the company's safety, environmental, and
economic objectives. Assists in providing engineering services, such
as, process performance evaluation, optimization of refinery
operations, troubleshooting, process simulation, and data analysis.
TYPICAL DUTIES. Performs routine engineering calculations (i.e., mass
balances, energy balances, and conversion calculations). Gathers,
analyzes, and interprets pertinent unit operations data to
troubleshoot and optimize operating issues. Issues recommendations
for improving unit yields and optimizing energy consumption.
Initiates and justifies new projects, additional monitoring and other
improvements to the unit. Recognizes Safety, Health and Environmental
issues that impact the unit, the refinery and all personnel.
Interprets instructions on specific assignment objectives, complex
features, and possible solutions. Assignments usually include one or
more of the following: equipment design and development, test of
materials, preparation of specifications, process study, research
investigations, report preparation, and other activities of limited
scope requiring knowledge of principles and techniques commonly
employed in the specific area of assignments.
Requirements
Must be currently pursuing a major in Chemical Engineering. Must be
entering Junior year by September 2008. Must have an overall GPA of
3.0 or above. Must be able to meet hour requirements -Fall/Winter
Interns: 40 hrs/week. Must have strong references from professors,
former employers. No engineering experience in a petroleum industry
required. Skills at use of spreadsheet software and operation of a
desktop computer are

- Beginning of cycle power ascension and testing

Qualifications
Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program at an accredited college/university with a major in Nuclear Engineering.

Able to relocate to Perry, Ohio for the duration of the assignment.

About the Opportunity
Co-op student will be assigned to the Planning/Operations group of Illuminating Company Engineering Services, performing analytical tasks related to the planning and operation of the Illuminating Company's distribution and subtransmission systems. Additional responsiblities will be related to system reliability and will include data entry and recording for yearly regulatory required inspection and maintenance programs, data entry of distribution system outage information into the PowerOn outage management system, and updating additional reliability-related databases. Opportunity will also exist to expose the co-op student to other areas within Engineering Services such as design, mapping, and field work. Responsibilities in the ESSS Maintenance group of Illuminating Company Engineering Services, including assisting is the management of PUCO required Maintenance and Inspection programs. Co-op will also be exposed to FirstEnergy's work management and Geographic Information System mapping systems.
Qualifications
College student enrolled in an Electrical Engineering cirriculum. Successful completion of basic Electicial Engineering coursework is beneficial.
Knowledge of or the ability to learn specific PC applications such as Lotus Notes and the Microsoft Office suite is necessary.
Experience and proficiency in the use of AutoCAD or similar applications is beneficial.
Demonstrated ability to perform work in an accurate, neat, and orderly fashion.
Oral and written communications skills are necessary to effectively convey information.
Mechanical drafting abilities are beneficial.
Must be able to interact and cooperate with fellow employees in a tactful, courteous, and diplomatic manner.
